“Somewhere between Muse and Kate Bush.” This is the response from Iran-born, Toronto-raised Parmida Kakavand – the mind behind Päter – when asked to describe their meld of Alt Rock, Singer-Songwriter and Pop. The irreverence one could assume from their answer is at the forefront of much of their catalogue, spanning from 2020’s viral hit “Dam, Damn” (which amassed over 2.5 million streams online) to 2024’s “Nicotine Hallelujah”, a folk leaning indie rock anthem on trying their first cigarette.
With their debut 2024 LP “4-7 Company”, co-produced with Howard Redekopp (Tegan & Sara, Mother Mother), Päter explores the underbelly of their carefree persona, diving into darker soundscapes and raw, vulnerable lyricism. The album earned the artist critical acclaim on outlets like CBC, Exclaim! and Obscure Sound. 2024 saw Päter featured on festival stages at CMW, Cityfolk Ottawa, and POP Montreal. With their eclectic sound and praise winning performances, all signs show Päter as an artist on the rise. There’s no telling what we’ll hear next, but this Canadian artist has commanded our attention.
